How an aspect ratio is worked out

An aspect ratio is the width compared with the height, written as two whole numbers. To find it, divide both sides by the largest number that goes into each of them evenly.

For 1920 × 1080, that number is 120. 1920 ÷ 120 is 16 and 1080 ÷ 120 is 9, so the ratio is 16:9. A 1080 × 1350 feed post works the same way: both sides divide by 270, giving 4:5.

The ratio says nothing about quality. 1280 × 720 and 3840 × 2160 are both 16:9; one simply has more pixels.

Why videos get black bars or lose their edges

When a video's shape doesn't match the screen, the app has two choices: shrink the video to fit and fill the gaps with bars, or fill the screen and cut off whatever hangs over the edge.

A 16:9 video shown full screen in a 9:16 space loses more than two-thirds of its width. If your face or your captions sit near the sides, they're gone. Editing to the right shape before you post is the only way to choose what stays in view.

Which shape to film in

If the video is going to Reels, TikTok or Shorts, film upright, in 9:16. It fills the screen and you won't need to crop.

If one recording has to work everywhere, film in 9:16 at the highest size your phone allows and keep the important part in the middle. A 4:5 or 1:1 version can then be cut from the centre without losing your face. Going the other way, from a wide 16:9 recording to 9:16, keeps only a narrow strip.
