Square Shorts
A square video under 3 minutes posts as a Short. It plays in the middle of the screen with space above and below, which keeps it clear of the title and buttons. That's handy for a clip cut from a wide recording, but 9:16 is still the shape that fills the phone.
When you don't want a Short
If a vertical video should be a regular YouTube video, it has to be longer than 3 minutes. YouTube's own advice is to use a wide shape, such as 16:9, for long-form videos.
