Instagram post size and dimensions
The best Instagram post size is 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4), the tallest shape Instagram keeps. 1080 × 1350 (4:5) and 1080 × 1080 (1:1) work too; anything from 1.91:1 to 3:4 posts without cropping.

Instagram post dimensions
Instagram keeps photos up to 1080 pixels wide, in any shape between these two limits.
| Shape | Size | Ratio | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall portrait | 1080 × 1440 px | 3:4 | The most room in the feed; matches the profile grid |
| Portrait | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | The long-time standard; still fills the feed width |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Graphics and quotes |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 | The widest Instagram keeps; small in the feed |
Why 3:4 is the new tallest
Instagram's help centre now lists 3:4 as the tallest shape it keeps (1080 × 1440), up from 4:5. A 3:4 photo takes more of the screen in the feed and matches the rectangles on your profile grid, so nothing important gets trimmed there.
Taller than 3:4, and Instagram crops it. Wider than 1.91:1, and it crops the sides.
Carousels and videos
A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos, and every slide takes the shape you pick for the first one. Make them all the same size before you start, or some will be cropped.
A single video posted to Instagram is shared as a Reel, so size it like one: 1080 × 1920. Videos inside a carousel aren't Reels; they take the carousel's shape. The checker above checks a video against Instagram's video sizes.
