How to edit TikTok videos when you talk to camera and hate editing

How to edit TikTok videos when you film yourself talking: trim and split in TikTok's editor, add captions, keep text clear of the buttons, then upload.

8 min read

Why a 60-second TikTok takes an hour to edit

You filmed yourself for four minutes to get forty good seconds. In between are the retakes, the pauses while you remembered the next line, and three versions of the opening. TikTok's editor can cut every one, but each cut is a split made with your thumb. Then captions, then text, and then you post and find the text sits under the like button.

This guide is for that video. It covers the jobs in the order that saves time, what TikTok's app does for you, and what it leaves to you. Every step inside the app follows TikTok's own help pages, read on 7 October 2026 and linked where they're used.

Do the jobs in this order

Captions and text sit on top of the cut. Add them first and you move them every time you cut something, so the order matters more than the app:

  • Cut. Trim the start, remove the retakes and the long pauses, and make the first second your first word.
  • Captions. Add them from your voice and read every line.
  • Text and stickers. Only if the video needs them.
  • Check the safe zone. Nothing important under TikTok's buttons, username or description.
  • Post. Description, cover, then Post or Drafts.

Half of the cutting is decided before you press record. Say each line as its own take, and when you get one wrong, say the whole sentence again. Check the script's length with the script timer; a teleprompter means fewer retakes. Video editing tips has more of these habits.

Trim and split clips in TikTok's editor

For one or two clips with a tidy start and end, TikTok's editor is all you need. These steps follow TikTok's page on editing TikTok videos and photos.

  1. Open the editing tools

Tap Add post + at the bottom. Record, or tap Upload to pick videos from your phone. If you uploaded, tap Next, then Edit on the side panel. If you recorded, tap the Continue ✓ button, then Edit.

  2. Shorten a clip

Tap the clip, or tap Edit at the bottom, then hold and drag the arrow on either side. Drag the left arrow of your first clip right up to your first word.

  3. Cut a mistake out of the middle

Place the line where the mistake starts and tap Split. Drag the end of the first clip back to before the mistake, and the start of the second forward to after it. TikTok's page describes splitting and dragging, not a delete button, so the arrows do the job.

  4. Put the clips in order

Press and hold a clip and drag it along the track.

Two limits from the same page: up to 35 photos and videos in one editing session, and one sound per post.

Cut the retakes and pauses, which TikTok leaves to you

TikTok's editing page lists trimming, splitting, speed, transitions, sound, text, overlays and a Magic tool that adds effects. Nothing on it is described as finding a pause, spotting a repeated line or picking the better take. For a talking video that's where the time goes: twenty retakes is forty splits.

If the recording is short and clean, cut it in TikTok. If it isn't, cut it somewhere with a bigger timeline and upload the finished file; the last section covers that. The silence remover shows how much silence a clip holds, and the jump cut guide shows how to make the joins look intentional.

Add captions: TikTok has two kinds

TikTok's page on accessibility for your videos describes two kinds. Creator captions are made while you edit, from your voice, and you can change their font style and colour. Auto-generated captions are made by TikTok for videos you upload; you pick their language before posting and can only edit them once the video is live. For a talking video, use the first kind.

  1. Get to the preview screen

Tap Add post +, record or upload your video, then continue to the preview screen.

  2. Tap Captions on the side panel

TikTok transcribes the speech in your video. The first time, it asks you to opt in.

  3. Read every line

You can preview and edit each line. Names, brands and numbers are where automatic captions go wrong.

  4. Tap Save

The captions are now part of your post.

For the auto-generated kind: on the post screen, tap More options, tap Select video language, choose the language, then Post. To fix or remove them after posting, open the video, tap the caption, tap Edit captions, then Save. Removing matters if you added captions in another editor: those are part of the picture, and two sets double up.

Whichever kind, use a plain, heavy font and a few words at a time; the caption font preview shows how fonts read on a phone.

Add text, and keep it out from under TikTok's buttons

On a 1080 × 1920 video, measured from TikTok's own safe zone file, keep text, faces and anything that matters inside these lines:

  • 240 px from the top (the tabs and search).
  • 660 px from the bottom (your username and description).
  • 120 px from each side.
  • Left of 780 px from the 840 px mark down: a 180 px column of buttons runs down the lower right.
  • That leaves a clear area of 840 × 1020 px. A long description pushes higher, so leave more room at the bottom if you write one.

To add text in TikTok: from the editing screen tap Text at the bottom, type, then tap the Continue ✓ button. Drag the arrow on either side of the text below the video track to set how long it stays. For styling, TikTok's page on editing, posting and deleting describes the preview screen: tap Text on the side panel, pick a font, tap the colour wheel, pinch to resize. To delete text, hold it and drag it to the top until Delete appears.

Same video going to Reels and Shorts? The safe zone checker shows the one box that's clear on all of them.

Size, shape and length

Film with the phone upright. TikTok asks for 9:16 at 720p or better; 1080 × 1920 is what most phones record and the size to export from any editor. Its posting tools take 360 to 4096 pixels a side and files up to 4 GB. A 16:9 video plays as a narrow strip with black above and below.

On length, TikTok's camera tools page says videos recorded in the app can be up to 10 minutes and uploaded videos up to 60. Its guide for posting tools says every account can post 3 minutes and only some can post 5 or 10; our TikTok video length checker uses those limits. For a talking video, under a minute is usually right. One catch: a sound chosen before you record or upload sets the video's length.

Edit on a computer, then upload the finished video

You can't edit a TikTok video on a computer with TikTok's own tools. Its page on making a post describes the web upload as three clicks and adds that the whole video is uploaded: to change its length, use the app. So the computer route is: edit in any editor, export one file, upload it.

  1. Export at 1080 × 1920

Do the cut, and the captions if you want them styled, in your editor. Video editing for beginners walks through a first cut; how to edit a video on iPhone covers Photos and iMovie.

  2. Upload it

On your phone: tap Add post +, tap Upload, pick the file, tap Next. On a computer: click Upload at the top of tiktok.com, click Select video, choose the file.

  3. Add what you left out

If the file has no captions, tap Captions on the side panel now.

  4. Finish the post

Tap Next. Add a description, tap Select cover to pick the frame that shows on your profile, then tap Post, or Drafts to come back later.

Keep the exported file: TikTok says drafts are removed if the app is reinstalled.

Questions

Asked often

TikTok's camera tools page says videos recorded in the app can be up to 10 minutes and videos you upload can be up to 60 minutes. Its guide for posting tools says every account can post 3 minutes and only some can post 5 or 10, so check what your account offers. If you pick a sound before recording or uploading, the sound's length sets the video's length.

Only in part. TikTok's help pages describe editing or removing the auto-generated captions on a posted video (tap the caption, then Edit captions) and deleting a post, which can be recovered for 30 days. They don't describe changing the cut of a posted video, so to fix the video itself, edit the file and post it again.

On the preview screen, tap Captions on the side panel. TikTok transcribes your speech, lets you edit each line, and you tap Save. TikTok also generates captions for uploaded videos by itself: choose the language under More options on the post screen, and fix them after posting with Edit captions.

1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 aspect ratio, which is what a phone records upright. TikTok asks for at least 720p, and its posting tools take 360 to 4096 pixels a side and files up to 4 GB. Keep text out of the top 240 px, the bottom 660 px, 120 px at each side and the button column on the lower right.

Not with TikTok's own tools. TikTok's web upload takes the whole file and says to use the app to change the length. Edit in any computer editor, export one file at 1080 × 1920 and upload it from the app or from tiktok.com. Krafto runs in a web browser and does the cutting and captions for you.

TikTok's editing page lists trim, split, speed, transitions, text, sound, overlays and a Magic tool for effects. None of them is described as removing pauses or retakes. Cut them by splitting in the app, in a separate editor, or ask Krafto to cut them for you.
