Is Descript free?
Yes, Descript has a free plan, and it's enough to try the idea of editing a video by editing its words. You get 60 minutes of media a month and a one-off 100 AI credits.
The limits are what push people to pay: free exports are 720p and carry a watermark, and the AI tools, including Underlord and Remove Filler Words, are only available in a limited form.
Media hours and AI credits: the two limits to watch
Descript meters your plan two ways. Media hours are how much video and audio you can bring in each month: 10 hours on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator. AI credits are spent whenever you use an AI tool, including Underlord: 400 a month on Hobbyist, 800 on Creator.
For one or two short videos a week, Hobbyist is usually enough. If you record long podcasts or lean on the AI tools for every edit, credits run out before hours do, and that's what moves people up to Creator.
Descript next to Krafto
The same questions for both, including the ones Krafto doesn't win: there's no free plan, it only runs in a browser, and it starts above Descript's cheapest plan.

Which should you pay for?
Pay for Descript if you make podcasts or interviews and like the idea of deleting words on a page to cut the video. You still work inside an editor and read through a transcript, and the AI help is rationed by monthly credits.
Pay for Krafto if you film yourself talking and the editing is what you want gone: it makes the first cut from your clips, with the pauses and retakes out and the captions on. No free plan or trial, no phone app, and no template library: you film, Krafto cuts, and you check the result in a browser.
Where Krafto fits
Krafto works differently from every editor on this page: you upload your clips and say what you want, and it cuts the retakes and pauses, adds captions and hands you a first cut. You change things by asking, and the timeline is still there if you want it. It costs $25 a month. There's no free plan, so it only makes sense if editing is the part you want off your plate.
