Speech length

How many words is a 3-minute speech?

About 390 to 480 words at an average pace. Long enough for one good story, short enough that nobody checks the time: the classic length for a wedding toast.

What fits in three minutes

Three minutes is about 450 words, just under a single-spaced page or about two double-spaced pages. It's one story told properly, with a beginning and a point.

It's the usual length for a wedding toast, a best man or maid of honour speech at the short end, a eulogy when several people are speaking, and the Three Minute Thesis competition, where researchers explain their work with one slide and a hard stop at three minutes.

Leave room for laughter

A toast that's 450 words on paper runs long on the day: laughter, an "aww", the clink of glasses. Write about 390 words and let the room fill the rest.

Practise it out loud at least three times, once in front of someone who will tell you the truth. Anything you stumble on twice, rewrite in the words you'd actually say. Print it in a large font, or put it on a teleprompter on your phone, so you can look up between lines.
