What fits in ten minutes

Ten minutes is about 1,500 words: six double-spaced pages, three single-spaced, in a dozen paragraphs. That's room for a real argument with evidence, not just a point and a story.

It's the length of a talk at a meetup or a club, a sales pitch, a school assembly, a short homily, and the presentation many employers ask for in a final interview, usually followed by questions.

Don't read ten minutes word for word

Reading a full script for ten minutes sounds flat, and you'll look at the page more than the room. Write the full text to get the timing right, then turn it into notes: the first and last lines in full, and a few words for each part in between.

If you do need every word, as many people do in an interview or in a second language, read from a teleprompter at your own pace and rehearse until you can look up for whole sentences. Plan about nine minutes of material, around 1,350 words, for a ten-minute slot; nerves, a slide that won't load or a laugh will take the rest.
